2016 Angies List Super Service Award
By Asheville Computer Company / AwardsBusinessNews / / 0 Comments

The Asheville Computer Company has won the Angie’s List Super Service Award for 2016 making it the 4th year in a row for this prestigious award. We previously won this award for 2015, 2014 and 2013.

Below is the press release from Angie’s List.

The Asheville Computer Company Earns Esteemed 2016 Angie’s List Super Service Award

Award reflects company’s consistently high level of customer service

The Asheville Computer Company has earned the home service industry’s coveted Angie’s List Super Service Award, reflecting an exemplary year of customer service to members of the local services marketplace and consumer review site in 2016.

This achievement is particularly significant as Angie’s List experienced unprecedented member growth in 2016. More than 1.6 million consumers, many of whom were eager to quickly hire highly qualified service pros, joined Angie’s List after the company added a new, free membership tier.

“Companies that can meet higher demands without missing a beat in their exemplary performance standards truly do stand apart from their peers,” said Angie’s List Founder Angie Hicks. “Only a fraction of the Computer Repair companies in Asheville were able to do it.”

Angie’s List Super Service Award 2016 winners have met strict eligibility requirements, which include an “A” rating in overall grade, recent grade, and review period grade. The SSA winners must also be in good standing with Angie’s List, pass a background check and abide by Angie’s List operational guidelines.

Service company ratings are updated daily on Angie’s List as new, verified consumer reviews are submitted. Companies are graded on an A through F scale in areas ranging from price to professionalism to punctuality.

For more than 21 years, Angie’s List restricted access to its verified reviews to consumers who paid membership fees. When the company removed that barrier, some companies worried that the new, non-paying members would not be as engaged as members of the past. Experience has shown, however, that these newly added members are just as engaged – across all age groups – as prior members. Also, because the company continues to adhere to its review verification process, there has been no degradation of review quality.

“The biggest change at Angie’s List is that we are connecting even more consumers to high quality service professionals,” Hicks said. “And that’s good for everyone.”

###

Angie’s List helps facilitate happy transactions between more than 4.5 million consumers nationwide and its collection of highly rated service providers in more than 720 categories of service, ranging from home improvement to health care. Built on a foundation of more than 10 million verified reviews of local service, Angie’s List connects consumers directly to its online marketplace of services from member-reviewed providers, and offers unique tools and support designed to improve the local service experience for both consumers and service professionals.

One Billion Drive Hours and Counting: Q1 2016 Hard Drive Stats

Backblaze recently released their quarterly data on hard drive failures for Q1 2016.  This is the ultimate source of info on a large number of hard drives tested over long periods from all the major manufacturers.  It’s impossible to get this much specific info over such a large set of drives without being in the backup business on a large scale.

From their testing it seems like HGST (Hitachi) is the brand to beat when it comes to large spinning hard drives.  If you have a need for large amounts of reliable storage then the HGST hard drives seem to be the way to go, for now.

If you have a need to store large amounts of data but aren’t sure of how to setup a PC or system for this please give us a call to discuss.

Windows quicktime hack
By Asheville Computer Company / NewsPCWindows / / 0 Comments

If you have a PC and have QuickTime installed it’s time to get rid of it quick 🙂

Apple and the US government are telling customers with a Windows operating system that QuickTime is no longer being updated and has potential security issues that could let hackers into your computer.

Quicktime was used as a video player in the past but hasn’t had a major update on the Windows side since 2005. On the Mac side it’s last major update was in 2009 and Apple will continue to support it there.

Quicktime is still available for download as some users still need it for certain programs and activities but the vast majority of users haven’t used it in a long time and don’t need it anymore.

As of now, there aren’t any known cases of an infection through one of these vulnerabilities but it’s probably only a matter of time before they are exploited.

You can check out the CCN Money article below for more details.

Quicktime can be removed through the normal Windows uninstall process but if you have any issues or aren’t quite sure how to do it please contact us. In most cases we can connect remotely and get it uninstalled in a very short time.

Windows 10 Forced Upgrade and how to prevent it
By Asheville Computer Company / NewsPCWindows / / 0 Comments

Microsoft has recently changed the status of the the upgrade to Windows 10 from an “OPTIONAL” update to “RECOMMENDED”.  This doesn’t mean there is more reason to upgrade than before but it does mean that you may see a confusing prompt that the upgrade to Windows 10 has started.

If you get the Windows screen that tells you the upgrade has started (similar to picture below) you will need to decline to keep the upgrade from proceeding.  You will probably get several more prompts between now and July 2016 for the upgrade and will need to decline every time.

If you are upgraded to Windows 10 without clicking Accept or without your knowledge you still have 30 days to revert back to Windows 7 or 8.

Microsoft accept Windows 10 upgrade

If you would like to us to clean up your computer and upgrade to Windows 10, the right way, please let us know.  We do a thorough clean up and repair prior to the upgrade along with gathering the required driver updates.  This is to ensure that it goes smoothly and no issues arise from the upgrade.
