The customer reported that their fairly new Dell Studio XPS would no longer turn on after a recent storm. Most of the time when pushing the power button it would turn a faint yellow color but it would not boot and there was no noise as if it was starting up.
We diagnosed it over the phone as a bad power supply and when we got it into the shop that is exactly what we found. The power supply was replaced and got it back up and running with no issues. We also took the chance to upgrade the power supply to a more powerful, reliable and cooler running model.
If your computer won’t boot or seems to have power issues bring it us to check it out and get you back up and running.
If you are on Windows 7 or 8 and want the free upgrade to Windows 10 then you only have a few more months.
We recommend you make sure your computer is in great shape and ready for the upgrade before making the move. This will ensure it goes smoothly and that if problems arise we can take care of them.

This customer brought us a newer Dell laptop that wouldn’t boot into Windows anymore and would only get a blue screen of death. The blue screen will show you the error that caused the boot issue but will often times be cryptic or cover a wide variety of possible issues. Through some troubleshooting we can determine if it’s a software issue caused by some corruption or a hardware issue.
In this case, the hard drive had physically failed either due to a manufacturing defect or wear and tear. Laptops are prone to have issues with traditional spinning hard drives as the platters inside spin at a very high rate of speed (5400 or 7200 revolutions per minute). If the laptop is dropped of moved suddenly there can be physical damage inside the hard drive that can manifest immediately or degrade the performance over time.
We replaced the old hard drive with a smaller solid state hard drive. This should keep any physical problems from occurring in the future, as it has no moving parts. While the ruggedness of the SSD drive is a great benefit the even greater benefit is the tremendously increase speed of the computer. Modern computers with a solid state drive installed will boot and be ready for use in less than 30 seconds and respond immediately to any user actions, such as opening files, playing videos and editing photos.
If you have an issue with your computer that seems to be getting slower over time or you are receiving messages about potential hard drive issues please contact us today to setup an appointment.
If you aren’t having issues but want to prevent possible hard drive failure or just want a speed boost then we can help you there too.
If you have a PC and have QuickTime installed it’s time to get rid of it quick 🙂
Apple and the US government are telling customers with a Windows operating system that QuickTime is no longer being updated and has potential security issues that could let hackers into your computer.
Quicktime was used as a video player in the past but hasn’t had a major update on the Windows side since 2005. On the Mac side it’s last major update was in 2009 and Apple will continue to support it there.
Quicktime is still available for download as some users still need it for certain programs and activities but the vast majority of users haven’t used it in a long time and don’t need it anymore.
As of now, there aren’t any known cases of an infection through one of these vulnerabilities but it’s probably only a matter of time before they are exploited.
You can check out the CCN Money article below for more details.
Quicktime can be removed through the normal Windows uninstall process but if you have any issues or aren’t quite sure how to do it please contact us. In most cases we can connect remotely and get it uninstalled in a very short time.
This picture is a composite of several of the so called “helper” programs installed on this PC that brought it performance to a crawl. These programs usually start off as a tag along to a “free” program such as a coupon printer or a YouTube downloader. These programs are usually free because they are subsidized by the extra programs.
Once you have one of these programs installed it will usually bother you with annoying pop-ups to upgrade, ads for other products and threatening screens that show that you computer is highly “un-optimized” and about to blow up!
The programs usually fall into a grey category of not quite being malware or a virus but as semi-legitimate software that is of very poor quality or just an add-on meant to display ads to generate revenue. Most removal software will list them under the PUP category. PUP stands for potentially unwanted program.
I have linked to a review of one of the backup programs that we see a lot in these cases. The software will actually back up your files but it’s very expensive, the data is unencrypted, and may not actually be there if you hard drive fails.

These programs can be removed but they can be stubborn and can cause damage to Windows on the way out the door. We have dealt with hundreds of these programs and are able to remove them and restore your computer back to working order.

This customer had an older HP desktop that was still useful and served all their needs but the fan went out on the power supply causing it do overheat and shut down. After the computer was on for a few minutes there was a warning beep and it would shut down unexpectedly. Most computers have a built in defense against overheating where they will shut down to prevent permanent damage to the components.
We replaced the original power supply with a more robust and better cooled version that should last for years and operate worry free. This new power supply will cool better and provide steady power the computer needs to operate.
If you have an older computer that seems to shut down own it’s own or you are hearing loud noises that could be worn out or damaged fans on the power supply of motherboard then please setup an appointment to have it checked out.
A simple and cost effective power supply replacement could prolong the life of your computer and keep you up and running during a crucial time. It’s better to fix it now when you can choose the time instead of it breaking and forcing a repair when you need it most.
This Toshiba laptop was brought to us by a customer who complained of it being slow. It was only a couple of years old and had a great processor and a good amount of RAM so the only culprit had to be the slow hard drive.
We replace the old mechanical hard drive with a super fast SSD drive and cloned over the user’s data. When the customer received the laptop everything looked exactly like it did before but the laptop operated even faster than it did when it was new.

The user of this laptop was forced into a Windows 10 update and when it completed it would no longer boot into Windows. The computer would start to boot into the new Windows 10 and would hang for hours on a spinning waiting icon.
We were able to clear the update and get the laptop to boot correctly again and repair any damage done by the unwanted Windows 10 upgrade. Windows 10 works now once any issues had been sorted out with the laptop before the upgrade.

This HP was several years old and the user reported that it had become sluggish and was waiting several minutes to boot and to open files. Once a couple of programs were open the computer would slow to a crawl and become a pain to use.
We replaced the old standard hard drive with a new solid state hard drive. This computer used to take over 4 minutes to boot and be ready to use. With the new drive it boots in less than 30 seconds and it ready to go.
We can breath new life into computers that are a couple of years old by replacing the traditional spinning hard drive with a new still SSD hard drive. These days the slowest part of many computers is the old hard drive.
